Vermont state law requires that all children under age 16 be properly restrained. Children under one year of age and weighing less than 20 pounds must ride in a rear-facing car seat. Children over one year of age and weighing more than 20 pounds should ride in a federally approved car seat or booster seat until they are at least 8 years old. The car seat or booster should be appropriate for the child's age, height and weight, and should be used according to manufacturer's instructions. Children ages 8 through 15 should ride in a properly fitted seat belt.
